International Lindsay* DNA Group 8

"Lindseys of Rutherford County, NC & Scotland"

The defining term "Lindseys of Rutherford County, NC & Scotland" is used in an attempt to establish a basic geography for the founders of the composite DNA Group 8.

Margaret Lindsey Smith is the Group Administrator for DNA Group 8 and can be reached via e-mail by clicking on Margaret L. Smith.  Margaret is a very knowledgeable researcher for this grouping of Lindseys and should be your first contact for questions pertaining to DNA Group 8 genealogy and the determination of the Most Recent Common Ancestors (MRCA).  The Lindsey lineage of Margaret L. Smith is represented by DNA Group 8 participant L0048.  If you are a member of or related to DNA Group 8, you might wish to contact Margaret L. Smith to see if she wishes to add your name to the private,  password protected web site that she has established for DNA Group 8 "cousins".

The DNA Group 8 is currently composed of sixteen (16) participants.

Click on DNA Data Spreadsheet to see the DNA marker values for the current participants of DNA Group 8.

*************************************************************

After the 43-marker upgrade testing, participant L0065 was removed from DNA Group 8 due to his results now exceeding the maximum of four mismatching markers.

At this point in the analysis, it has been determined through the traditional paper trail, that the MRCA for participants L0015 (deceased 2002) & L0073 is Carleton Lindsey (ca 1760-1825).  Participants L0015 (deceased) and L0073 are a perfect 26 out of 26 marker match.  In the interest to see how they would match up at the current 43 markers, the son of L0015, L0103, has been tested for the 43 markers.  In the expanded 43-marker testing, L0073 and L0103 have one miss-matching marker, which further substantiates their descent from a common ancestor.

It would also appear that the MRCA for participants L0015, L0103, L0073 and L0048 is the father of Carleton and Micajah Lindsey.  Participant L0015 believed that Caleb Lindsey is the father of his Carleton Lindsey.  Participant L0048 believes that James William Lindsey (b. ca 1729, d. 1800 Rutherford County, North Carolina), who married Mary Carleton, is the father of Micajah and Carleton Lindsey.  L0048 has 3 mismatching markers with L0073 and two mismatching markers with L0103.

Participants L0162 and L0169 are believed to share Caleb Lindsey (ca 1725 - 1784 Chatham County, NC), married to Rosanna Martin, as a Most Recent Common ancestor (MRCA) via the sons; James Lindsey (1755 - 1838 Trigg Co., Kentucky), married to Delilah Hodgson Brewer and John Lindsey (ca 1748 - 1793 Orange Co., NC), married to Mary Robinson.

The graphic near the bottom of this page can be used to help show the MRCA for some of the participants of this group.

If you have information, accompanied by the appropriate citations, that demonstrate how any one of these Lindsey lineages in DNA Group 8 are connected, please contact Margaret L. Smith, Administrator, DNA Group 8.

Reference Notes

  1. Proper Analysis of DYS389-1 & DYS389-2 Marker Mutations.

In analyzing the marker values in the table representing this DNA Group, it is important to remember the following in your analysis of loci DYS389-1 and DYS389-2 matches and mismatches.

  1. The loci DYS389-1 and DYS389-2 are two legitimate lengths of DNA but move in tandem.
  2. DYS389-1 refers to the length of only one portion of the DYS389 marker.
  3. DYS389-2 refers to the total length of the DYS389 marker. Therefore, when there is a one step mutation at DYS389-1, it will also appear to be in DYS389-2.
  4. When comparing one individual to another, if the values for two individuals differ by one repeat at DYS389-1, that represents a one-step mismatch.
  5. If the values for the same two individuals differ also by one repeat at DYS389-2, then it should only be counted as one combined mutation for DYS389-1 & DYS389-2.
  6. If the marker values for two individuals differ by one repeat mismatch at DYS389-1 and a two repeat mismatch at DYS389-2, then it should be counted as two separate mismatches or mutations.
  7. There is another and potentially even more confusing situation that could occur at marker DYS389. If the marker values for two individuals differ by one repeat mismatch at DYS389-1 and then a perfect match at DYS389-2 for these same two individuals. This should be counted as two separate marker mismatches since the value mismatch at DYS389-1 was offset by a mutation in the opposite "direction" from the value found at DYS389-2 and appears to cancel out the mutation that occurred at DYS389-1.
  8. However, keep in mind there can be a mutation at DYS389-2 that will not affect the length found at DYS389-1.

DNA Group 8 - Most Recent Common Ancestor Analysis

Details of this analysis was last updated: April 25, 2005

An attempt will be made to identify the merger of the various Lindsay/Lindsey lineages that currently make up the DNA Group 8.  The graphic below provides a current hypothesis, with certain assumptions, of how the known Lindseys (graphic #1 thru #12) of the United States could possibly be tied together.  There is currently no leads that will connect the two Scottish Lindsays (graphic #13 & #14) together or with the Lindseys of the United States.

All Lindsay (how ever spelled) researchers are encouraged to provide reference to whatever source document that you have in your possession that will prove or disprove any one of the relationships depicted below in the graphic.

Since the "given names" have been frequently reused by succeeding generations, each of the current sixteen individuals depicted in the graphic are represented by a number in an oval.  This number is provided to help simplify our on-going discussion of proving or disproving the current "assumed" relationships for this group of Lindseys.

In my analysis of this group of Lindseys, I have discovered that Bob Jordan , over his many years of Lindsay/Lindsey research, has amassed an enormous amount of information on this group of Lindseys. Thus, Bob Jordan is acknowledged as my primary source for a significant amount of the data used in tying these Lindsey lineages together as seen in the graphic above.  However, Bob would be the first to say that the conclusions involve several key assumptions and that many people (family & friends) have helped him acquire his Lindsey database.  These assumptions will be stated in the text below as they evolve.

I will add each item of proof / disproof as it pertains to the arbitrary numbers (1 thru 16) assigned to each individual in the graphic.

With that said, I would like to invite all Lindsay researchers to provide comment on the forgoing graphic analysis in order to establish or disprove its credibility.

Graphic Person #1

William Lindsey
b. 1700 (estimate)
d. 1766-68 Brunswick County, Virginia (will)
m. Jane 1725-30 (estimated)
The will of William Lindsey mentioned two sons - James and Caleb.  This Caleb Lindsey (son of William) may have been the Caleb Lindsey who died 1785 Chatham County, NC (not proven).

Graphic Person #2

James Lindsey Sr. (son of William Lindsey (#1)
 b. 1725-30 Virginia? (estimate)
 d. 1800-04 Rutherford County, NC
 m. Mary (Carlton?) estimated 1755-60

Widow of James Lindsey Sr., married Morris Roberts 1804 Rutherford County, North Carolina.  James Sr. probably moved from Brunswick County, Virginia to Surry County, North Carolina by 1786.  Land and court records show neighbors of Lindseys in Surry County, NC being the same as neighbors in Brunswick County, Virginia.  In 1788, James Lindsey moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, then in 1790s to Rutherford County, NC.   James Lindsey Sr. had five possible sons (#3, #4, #5, #6 & #7), not proven.

Graphic Person #3

James William Lindsey, (Jr.?)
b. 1755-60 Virginia (estimated)
d. After 1802 - last date on land deed 1802 Rutherford County, NC - may be one who went to Pulaski County, Arkansas and died there 1831 (not proven).
m. unknown, but could be a woman of the Green surname - sons (#8, #9, #10) all had the Green surname in the names of their children. Census records of grandsons seem to show James William was in North Carolina by at least mid 1770s.

James William Lindsey (Jr.?) had three sons (#8, #9 & #10). These Lindseys were always grouped together in location, deeds, and tax records.  All three moved to Kentucky near each other around 1810.  Caleb Lindsey moved to Illinois about 1829, John Lindsey to Indiana about 1829, James Lindsey remained in Kentucky.  The weak link is the 1790 census for James William Lindsey, which shows no sons, but they could have been in their grandmother's household at this time. There is a separation between these three sons and the deeds of their possible uncles.  DNA tests show a complete compatibility between descendants of John (#9) and Caleb (#10) and Micajah (#6) and Carleton (#4).  Without any doubt, these four tested descendants have a common biological ancestor.

Graphic Person #4

Carleton Lindsey
b. c. 1760 Virginia(?)
d. 1825 Trigg County, Kentucky
m. Mary (Unknown surname)

It is now believed that Carleton Lindsey (#4) had two sons, Taliferro (#11) and Starling/Sterling (#12).

Graphic Person #5

Joshua Lindsey
b. 1765-70 estimate
d. 1841 Mississippi
m. Unknown

Graphic Person #6

Micajah Lindsey
b. 1775 NC?/VA?
d. Aug. 1845 Dennis, Mississippi
m. Elizabeth McClurkin

Land records in Spartanburg Co. SC, dated 1797, connect Micajah Lindsey with James and John Lindsey. Micajah Lindsey was in Rutherford Co. NC in the 1800 census. Land transactions and court records in Rutherford Co. connect him to Carlton Lindsey. Between 1800 and 1816 he was most likely in Kentucky, near other Rutherford Co. NC Lindseys, and then possibly in Tennessee. A Micajah Lindsey is in Christian Co. Kentucky tax records for 1809, 1812 and 1814. By 1816 he was named in a Spartanburg Co. deed as being "of Monroe Co. Mississippi" - most probably in that part of the Mississippi Territory which became Jefferson Alabama. He is most likely the "M Lindsey" listed in the 1816 census of the Alabama part of the Mississippi Territory. In 1820 the home of "Micajah Lindsey, Esquire" in Jefferson Co. Alabama was designated as a polling place in an act of the state legislature. By 1837 he was in Mississippi. The 1837 census of Tishomingo Co., Mississippi mentions Caleb, M and Thomas H Lindsey, and in the Itawamba Co., Mississippi Deed Book 1, Micajah Lindsey of Tishomingo Co. sold land in Itawamba Co. to Henry Stegall.

The preceding information regarding Micajah Lindsey was provided by Margaret Lindsey Smith

Graphic Person #7

Caleb Lindsey, b. ca 1765-75 (estimated), d. 1826 Pulaski County, Arkansas, married Sarah Young.

Caleb Lindsey moved from ? to Christian County, Kentucky in 1798.  He was on that county's tax records through 1816.  By 1818 he received a deed in Stewart Co. Tennessee.  He was not there in 1820 (census), so may have moved to Arkansas by then.  May be connected to Rutherford County, North Carolina Lindseys.  Need DNA evidence here. Carlton (#4) and Joshua (#5) of Rutherford County, North Carolina moved to Christian County, Kentucky a few years after 1800 to the same creek where Caleb lived (per tax records).

Graphic Person #8

James Lindsey
b. 1770-1775 NC
d. 1842 Edmonson County, Kentucky
m. (1) Mary McMann 1792(?), (2) Frances Logan 1813, (3) Mary Goyer 1830

Graphic Person #9

John Lindsey (lived in Indiana)
b. 1775-1780 NC
d. Jan. 9, 1839 Chrisney, Spencer County, Indiana
m. Terry (Unknown surname)

Graphic Person #10

Caleb Lindsey (lived in Illinois)
b. 1778 NC
d. 1850-1860 Jackson County, Illinois
m. Rebecca or Rachel (Unknown)

Caleb Lindsey was son of either James Sr. (#2) or James William Lindsey (#3). He was in the 1800 Rutherford County, NC census and the 1810 Warren County, Kentucky census. The name Green, as a maiden surname for his wife, is speculation.  It's more likely the father (#3) of Caleb married a Green.  Brothers James (#8) and John (#9), as well as Caleb, used Green as middle name many times. Need DNA for family of James (#8).

Graphic Person #11

Taliferro Lindsey
b. 1816 KY
d. ca 1875 Pickens County, Alabama
m. Lavina Permelia Martin

Graphic Person #12

Starling/Sterling Lindsey
b. 1797 NC
d. 1864 MO
m. Mary Catherine Asbell

Graphic Person #13

David Lindsay
b. ?
d. ca 1835
m. Janet Drummond 1801 Fife

Graphic Person #14

Charles Lindsay
b. ca 1770
d. ? Scotland
m. ?

Graphic Person #15

James Lindsay
b. 1811 Fife, Scotland
d. 1855 Perthshire, Scotland
m. ?

Graphic Person #16

James Lindsay
b. 1807
d. 1878 Dundee, Scotland
m. ?
