David Lindsay - Revolutionary War Soldier
The photo of the historical marker above was posted with permission from Bobby Joe Seales (e-mail: bjseales@bellsouth.net ) of Shelby County, Alabama. ******************************** The following narrative on the life of David Lindsay of Shelby County Alabama was provided by Barbara Craddock Pike Shultz barbdale@flash.net . Barbara has been researching this Lindsey/Lindsay lineage for a number of years and we thank her for sharing her knowledge with the global Lindsay community. David Lindsey (1750 PA - 1835 AL)The David Lindsay Chapter of the DAR Montevallo, Alabama DAR was
formed in 1927, and named for David Lindsey who was reported to be a
Revolutionary Soldier buried at or near Elliottsville, Shelby County, Alabama,
USA. The DAR placed and dedicated a marker on Alabama Day, 1953 at the burial site
near Maylene, Alabama approximately 5 miles from Montevallo, (along Shelby Co.
Highway 17, south of Helena). The burial site for David Lindsey & Mary Casey also
contains the graves of others, marked and unmarked.
This gravesite is located on the old homestead of their son, Elijah
Lindsey, who is buried there in an unmarked grave. In 1953, Mrs. A. W. Vaughan, with the help of Mrs. John Oden Luttrell &
Miss Maude McClure Kelly, put together an extensive work on the first 3
generations of David Lindsey. This report came to the conclusion that David Lindsey & Mary Casey most
likely were from Pennsylvania, where their first children were born.
Then after 1773 and before 1785, they moved to Virginia.
David is reported to have served with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 6th
regiments of the Virginia Continental Lines for three years. After the war, the family moved to Tennessee, where the rest of their
children were born. They then are
found in Madison Co., Al; and then Shelby Co., AL, moving most likely with the
Elliott and Hail families. On August 2, 1784, David Lindsey received 100 acres granted in Virginia, for
his service in the War for Independence. David Lindsey is found in Shelby County, Alabama on the 1820 and 1830 census. It has been reported that David Lindsey (1750-1835) was the son of David Lindsey, b. abt 1695 in Pennsylvania, and Ruth Nyse, b. abt 1697 in Pennsylvania, who married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 25, 1717. have been actively researching the descendants of David Lindsey for about 2 1/2
years. Although he had 6 sons and 6
daughters who lived to maturity and married, to date, I have not made contact
with any male descendants who still carry the Lindsey/Lindsay name. Crowson, Lovelady, Fulton, Harmon, Hale/Hail, Elliott, Bailey, Payne, Smith, and Essman are just a few of the surnames that married into the Lindsey line in the first 2 generations. Barbara
Craddock Pike *************************** The Y-chromosome DNA haplotype for the Lindsey lineage of David Lindsey (1750-1835) is represented in the Lindsay International DNA Database by a perceived but currently unproven genealogical relationship with DNA participant L0028. See DNA Group 2 results. Additional research for the biographical sketch of this early Lindsay progenitor is underway and will be posted soon. |
